“I’m going to write a book”; “I’ve got this great idea for a screenplay”; “I’m going to start a business doing .”
I have mentored folks in these areas and a few have actually done it, some have started but not finished and most don’t even begin. It’s lip service with more bullshit than Texas rolling off their tongue. Is this you?
Having a friend holding you accountable only works for some. YOU have to hold yourself accountable. YOU know you are talking shit because you never get it done and no amount of motivation from someone else will get you to do it.
I have adapted a new motto after doing this with so many: “I push, but only if you pull. You stop pulling, I stop pushing.” To quote The Shawshank Redemption “I don’t waste my time on losers” and that might sting, being called a loser, but hey, if the shoe fits Cinderella, wear it. Maybe it will piss someone off enough to actually get up and DO something.
You might fail, so what? Suck it up buttercup and don’t stop after the first failure, try again and again and again. If you are banging your head on the wall and the wall doesn’t move, pick another spot on the wall or pick another wall but keep banging your head! Eventually something will happen. Maybe not exactly as you expected but you won’t find the other paths if you never walk the first one.
And if I hear the excuse of not having enough time to do blah, blah, blah, I swear I am going to smack somebody with a heavy alarm clock. Turn off the TV, get off the game system, whatever it is you do too much of and focus! Half an hour a day is a good start and don’t tell me you can’t find half an hour a day.
There’s all sorts of books and guru stuff out there about how to go about getting motivated and fired up, creating schedules, lists, routines, systems and strategies and that’s all fine, well, and good. But if you don’t possess the self respectability to get off your ass, it’s just another dust collector added to your shelf.
Get started. NOW. Not tomorrow, not after lunch, dinner, walking the dog or a kabillion other procrastination statements. NOW.
Am I over simpilfying? No. Just stop talking and start doing something…ANYTHING but running your mouth.
Here endeth the lesson.
